OPDC's work has generally fallen into three categories:
Community Advocacy/Community Organizing - OPDC works with residents on specific community identified issues. Currently, OPDC's community organizing efforts focus on engaging students in the community with long time residents, on keeping Oakland clean and safe, on connecting with the International populations, breaking down barriers to neighborhood attachment, and increasing home ownership.
Housing and Commercial Development - OPDC has built over 320 affordable housing units ownership and rental markets. These developments provide housing alternatives for low- and moderate-income families, special needs populations, and the elderly. Completed projects include Saybrook Court, Niagara Square, Holmes Place, Holmes Court, Pacelli House, Parkview Manor, Allequippa Place, the Atwood Street Apartments, Ward Street, Chesterfield Road, Lawn Street, and Dinwiddie Street.
Job Seeking Skills Training - Through the Hill-Oakland Workforce Collaborative, OPDC provides pre-employment skills training and job placement for unemployed and underemployed residents of Oakland and surrounding communities. Placements range across multiple wage and skill levels with strong concentrations in the healthcare industry where living wages and career ladders can be readily achieved.
